"Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and the Samurai Spirit"
This exhibition showcases swords from the collection of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, focusing on “the faith of the warrior class.” Swords, considered the pinnacle of ironwork and regarded as the origin of Japanese craftsmanship, were not only weapons but also believed to house divine spirits. Since its founding by Minamoto no Yoritomo, this shrine has received numerous sword offerings as proof of the warrior class's devotion. During the Kamakura period established by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the samurai code of ethics, “Bushido,” developed. Kamakura became the capital of the samurai, and our shrine became a center of devotion. We invite you to view the swords of our shrine, which have shared history with Bushido, along with various artifacts related to the samurai.
