The Bonbori Festival is one of summer features in Kamakura and will mark the 81st time it has been held.
The festival is composed of three main festivals: Nagoshi-sai, a purification ritual to mark the end of summer; Risshu-sai, for the arrival of autumn; and Sanetomo-sai, which commemorates the birthday of the 3rd shogun, Minamoto no Sanetomo. During the festival, about 400 Bonbori are displayed in the shrine’s precinct.
Many of Bonbori are offered to the shrine by local artists.
In this exhibition, we pick up and introduce about 100 Bonbori dedicated from 1938 to 1955 to review the history of the festival.

特别展“雪洞 BONBORI 雪洞祭的诞生 1938-1955”
今年即将迎来第81届鹤冈八幡宫雪洞祭，其可谓是镰仓夏天的一大风景线。
鹤冈八幡宫会在立秋前一天举行夏季驱邪仪式“夏越祭”，在立秋当天举行宣告秋季到来的“立秋祭”，并在源实朝的生日8月9日举行“实朝祭”，在此期间，我们将在神社境内立起雪洞灯笼，名曰“雪洞祭”。
雪洞上所绘的书画是出自镰仓相关各界名士之笔的贵重物品。
本次展览将展出1938年至1955年（昭和13年至昭和30年）供奉的约100幅雪洞书画，回顾从雪洞祭的诞生到近代的历史。
